XP3 Programmable Message Clock

If you like gadgets you need my RSS feed. It keeps you up-to-date on all the gizmos you love!

There I was perusing the aisles at a Sharper Image store (as I
am wont to do), and came across quite a few cool gadgets. The first one
started off as a science experiment of sorts, as there are quite a few
write-ups on href="http://www.eyetricks.com/xp3clock/howitworks.htm">how
it works. It is an LED message generator that uses a wand and
takes advantage of a quirk with the way our eyes work -
persistence of vision. Essentially, the wand that oscillates
back and forth lights up the LEDs on it at the right point in its
oscillation to form a complete message. Although the LED wand has moved
on from the point at which it flashed part of a character, persistence
of vision means that we continue to ’see it’ even though the wand is no
longer at that position in space.

That may not be the best explanation, but trust me - the end
result is very cool. You can pick up a practical use of this technology
in the form of a clock that can also be programmed to display messages,
the XP3 Programmable Message Clock.
