Not since the USB Food Hub from Solid Alliance have we seen a peripheral that made us actually want to put it in our mouths and swallow. These Cake Royale series drives range from chocolate, to some yellow looking one, to a white one with strawberries on top, and finally a fruity one. Can you tell we went to culinary academy for three years? No price yet, but the release date is sometime in Might. [Vavolo via Nexus404]

If you want to buy cheap goods at a cheap price in some sort of exciting way, there’s a Woot-off going on. Right now we see a $12.99 Franklin electronic dictionary that will probably sell out before we’re done writing this sentence, but hopefully the next few products are superior than this. Keep refreshing for that Bag of Crap. [Woot]

Remember that PSP Skype headset with the remote control that was announced way back in January? It’s now available. Skype functionality has been added in the 3.90 firmware update (also back in January), but if you haven’t updated yet, you’ll have to do so, and then follow these instructions to make calls. A newly published patent filing has revealed that Apple is considering a 3D remote control system that combines features found in the Wiimote and their own multi-touch technology. According to the filing, the system could detect the position of the remote control and be used to manipulate objects as well as “zoom into and out of an image or a portion thereof based on the absolute position of the remote control in the third axis”—features that Appleinsider believes could be destined for Apple TV.

References to gaming in the filing also serve to rehash old rumors about gaming and Apple Television as well as how a controller like this might fit into such plans. Naturally, I’ve my doubts about such theories given Apple’s stance on gaming over the years, but as with all rumors and patent filings, we will just have to wait and see what comes of it. MySpace Launches Data Availability

MySpace data can now be shared (by users) with other partners (Yahoo, Ebay, Twitter… more to come) so that user profiles, photos, music and videos can be accessed by other services. This mainly allows a superior integration into other services, the other alternative being using widgets which, by nature, aren’t so friendly to integration. The information will flow in real-time, which means that updates on MySpace will propagate to other services. Finally, MySpace account owners can decide to share or stop sharing the data at anytime. This is a global launch for all localized versions of MySpace.

E-Fuel’s MicroFueler, the home-based ethanol production system that makes gas from sugar or stale beer, was unveiled for the first time this day in New York. E-Fuel states it will now take preorders for the $10,000 system, and will ship it by the end of the year. As you can see, it’s not the smallest thing—no wonder the original image of it only showed a corner. Given its bulk and its price, what makes investing in this particular ethanol machine really worth it?

The system takes feedstock (a combination of sugar and yeast) or discarded alcohol, and combines it with water to distill 100% pure ethanol. Turning sugar into gas may sound like the work of mad scientists, but according to CEO Tom Quinn, home ethanol production was advocated and used by Henry Ford when he created the Model T. I envision that home-made ethanol wasn’t as simple to make back then, because if it was, we probably wouldn’t have switched to gasoline in the first place.

The MicroFueler produces ethanol using membrane distillation. Sugar, yeast and water are mixed together to create the chemical reaction that produces ethanol. After two days, the fermented sugar water is turned into vapor, and the ethanol is separated from the water. By the end of the week, the MicroFueler reservoir will hold 35 gallons of pure ethanol, enough to fill at least two automobiles. This is a lot like Dean Kamen’s water purifier, except in reverse. In fact, creator Floyd Butterfield says the water by-product is clean enough to drink.

The most incredible part is that a car doesn’t require pure ethanol to run, due to its higher-than-gasoline octane content. E-Fuel says you can fill up your tank with 75% ethanol and 25% water and your vehicle will run fine.

The price tag may seem steep, but federal, state and local tax credits can bring the price as low as $5000—average cost with credits is more like $7000. The creators say an average home will save around $4200 on gas each year, and the machine will pay for itself in about a year and a half.

That said, people have been doing this on their own for a while. Plans available on the web estimate a true DIY machine costs about $500 to build, but for those who don’t want to run the danger of spontaneous combustion (like me), the MicroFueler seems like a wise substitute. [E-Fuel]
